Governor's New Product Award

An Invitation to Innovators: Enter your new Florida-developed product, machine, process or material in the annual Governor's New Product Award competition. It's an opportunity to win public acclaim and prime billing for your innovations.

Introduction and Purpose: New and improved products stimulate the life and growth of Florida. These benefits result from research and development to which engineers make a unique contribution. This competition recognizes the results of those efforts and the foresight of the companies whose aggressive policies bring new products to the marketplace. The purpose of the Governor's New Product Award is to recognize the full spectrum of benefits that come from the research and engineering of new products in our state.

Eligibility: Any new product, machine, process or material that has been developed totally or in part in Florida may be entered. The product must have been introduced to the market between September 1, 2003 and September 1, 2006. Entries may be resubmitted as long as they continue to meet the program's requirements, rules and judging criteria.

Award Criteria: Awards will be based on three major criteria:

  1. Sales and economic impact.

  2. Innovative use of engineering principles, in creativity, technology and quality.

  3. Improved function with respect to savings, productivity, energy and improved safety.

Entries will be divided into categories of small, medium and large companies as determined by the judging committee. An award will be presented in each category.

Recognition: Winners will receive camera-ready emblems to display on company literature recognizing the award. Extensive coverage by the news media, including television, newspapers, technical and trade publications to promote the greatest public exposure for winning products and companies will be encouraged. Prior years' winners will be featured in future competitions. Awards will be presented at the Professional Engineer's Legislative Days sponsored by FES and FICE in Tallahassee, February 5, 2008. Winners in the Florida competition will automatically be entered in a parallel national program conducted by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Deadline: Entries must be received by November 27, 2007 for submittals to the Florida Professional Engineers in Industry in Tallahassee. Please mail your entries so they can be received by the deadline.

Governor's New Product Awards

The Governor's New Product Award program, established in 1985, salutes Florida inventors in the design and development of new products, machines, processes or materials. Selection of the winning entries is based on the sales & economic impact in the state of Florida, the innovative use of engineering principles, and the improved savings, productivity, energy efficiency and safety. The Governor's New Product Award program is administered by the Florida Professional Engineers in Industry, a practice section of the Florida Engineering Society.

"These innovative products demonstrate the positive contributions of Professional Engineers to our quality of life", said Executive Director Frank Rudd from the Florida Engineering Society. Three Florida companies were selected to receive the Governor's New Product Award for 2007.

2008 Governor's New Product Award Winner

The recipient of the 2008 Governor’s New Product Award in the small category is Hydromentia, Inc. in Ocala, FL. The winning product is the Alga Turf Scrubber ©. The Algal Turf Scrubber © (ATS) is a water treatment system that offers reliable, cost-effective, nitrogen and phosphorus control of agricultural, industrial and urban applications. The ATS serves as a culture unit for periphytic algae. In the Algal Turf Scrubber, polluted water is pulsed into waves across a sloped floway. Algal turf or dense mats of simple algae are cultivated on the floway surface. As the algae grow, they remove nutrient pollutants from the water. The algal biomass is then regularly harvested and processed into marketable commodities. Regular harvest of this material maintains the algae in an accelerated growth phase and provides sustainability as nutrients are continuously recovered and removed from the treatment unit.

HydroMentia, Inc. designs builds, and operates innovative, cost-effective, managed aquatic plan treatment systems for pollution control and water restoration in agricultural, industrial and urban applications. The company is headquartered out of Ocala, FL and has 10 employees.
