The Global Race to Produce Technologically Savvy Graduates is On

America is no exception, but we are losing our edge. Innovation has been the key to the rise of every great civilization. Applied math and science are the foundation of all technological learning. Our goals are to encourage visibility of the engineering profession in the classroom, increase the number of students entering the engineering field, provide resources to help educators teach engineering at all levels, and to make it fun!

Are you looking for a great idea to make engineering come alive for your classroom visit? Click on the pages below for tried and tested projects, programs and presentations. The resources are divided by grade level. Choose the appropriate audience to view the resources available.

How can an individual earn the Engineering Core Certification?

To obtain the Engineering Core certification, individuals shall take a minimum of 150 instructional hours in engineering and demonstrate content mastery on three separate Florida Engineering (FLENG) exams with qualifying scores of Accomplished or Distinguished.

What information do I need to submit to the Florida Engineering Society?

Documentation may be submitted to the Florida Engineering Society: Amanda Hudson, ahudson@fleng.org and must include:

  1. Full name of the eligible individual with academic grade level (Junior, Senior), if applicable
  2. Name and email address to which the industry certifications should be
  3. Score report for each qualifying

Do individuals need to attend a school that offers Project Lead The Way (PLTW) engineering courses school to earn the Florida Engineering Society industry certification?

No. Any high school student engaged in and planning to complete the 150 hours of engineering training may register for distance administration of the exams.

What is the FES industry certification code on the CAPE Funding list?

FLENG001

What is the official title of the Florida Engineering Society industry certification on the CAPE funding list?

Engineering Core Certification

What are FLENG exams?

The Florida Engineering (FLENG) exams are designed to measure content and transportable skill mastery in seven engineering subjects. Available exams include Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering & Architecture, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Digital Electronics, Environmental Sustainability, Introduction to Engineering Design, and Principles of Engineering. These exams, developed by Project Lead The Way, Inc., (PLTW), are nationally recognized as standards-based measures for students in project-based learning environments. Using multiple item types with scenario-based stimulus brings authenticity that holds student interest and supports the real-world contextualization that they have come to expect from PLTW.

How do I register for a FLENG exam?

To register for a FLENG exam, please email your request to pltwassessment@pltw.org.

How do I complete a FLENG exam?

FLENG exams may be administered using standardized assessment practice at schools with active PLTW Engineering programs, or under supervision and monitoring by the approved online remote proctor. Registration and testing must be completed between December and June of each academic year.

The tests are available on student devices with a stable internet connection. Devices may be Windows PC or laptop, Mac, Chromebook, or iPad. Students must also provide a separate video camera with a stable internet connection for positioning beside the testing station to support live monitoring (usually a cell phone).

What does it cost to take a FLENG exam?

There is no additional cost for students taking an assessment at a PLTW High School. The secure remote live proctoring cost is $45.00 per course, paid directly to the proctoring vendor, using a credit card when the appointment is scheduled.

How do I receive my scores?

Scores will be distributed through secure electronic transmission.

Can students complete multiple courses in the same year?

Yes. Students should complete the exam for each course at the end of their program year. Students must certify that they are currently enrolled in a High School Engineering course and have met or are planning to meet the requirement for the minimum of 150 instructional hours in engineering for each course (title) and may take each course-specific exam only once in an academic school year.
