It’s that time of the year again for Project CREATE’s expo! As you may be aware, Project CREATE is one of FES’ longest running and most successful programs intended to promote engineering to elementary school students. The expo, which is the culmination of the yearlong program, is where the participating schools take a fieldtrip to the Amway Arena to display their projects and participate in other fun events such as the paper plane competition, egg drop contest, and popsicle bridge competition. That’s where you come in! I need volunteers to help facilitate and judge the contests at the expo. It will be on Friday, February 19th from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Amway Arena. All volunteers will receive an FES T-shirt, a FREE ticket to that evening’s Magic game, and an opportunity to purchase additional tickets at a discounted rate of $20 each. Parking at the arena for the expo will be $10, but will also be good for parking at the game. Lunch will be on your own after the expo. If you would like to volunteer for this great event, please reply to this e-mail by Wednesday, February 10th. I will schedule a teleconference for all volunteers to give you additional details.

Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School is hosting a Career Day on Friday, March 26th from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm. The school is looking for volunteers to talk about a career in engineering. Real World Design Challenge – Call for Judges
The Florida Department of Education is seeking judges for the statewide Real World Design Challenge. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Real World Design Challenge is a competition for high school students who work together in teams to develop solutions to a real-world engineering problem. Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp announced Florida’s participation in the 2010 competition at the beginning of the 2009-10 school year. Teams consist of 3-7 high school students led by a teacher or other adult serving as the team coach. The competition is open to all students in Florida’s high schools. Schools are encouraged to develop cross-curricular teams representing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs. Click here for details.
Virtual Career Day – Call for Volunteers
The Florida Virtual School is preparing students for the future by shaping tomorrow's leaders and molding the future workforce. A counseling team works to promote career exploration through career webinars. The counseling team would like to go straight to the source and interview those butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, and other professionals in their fields to share info directly with our students.
In February, the counseling team would like to highlight professionals in the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We need your help to make this happen. If you are interested in sharing information about your field with the students on February 23rd, please send their contact information to Amy La Grasta, alagrasta@flvs.net.
The career day is completely on-line and should only be about 30 minutes of your time.
