A big THANK YOU to our members who came to Tallahassee to testify, but were unable to, due to postponement of the bill.

  • Ken Vogel, PE - Jones Edmunds & Associates, Inc.
  • Rich Koller, PE - Jones Edmunds & Associates, Inc.
  • Chris Lewis, PE - VIA Consulting Services, Inc.
  • JW Hunter, PE - Eisman & Russo, Inc.

SB 250 Express Lanes allows the express lanes to remain in operation only until tolls are collected to pay off the bonds that were created to pay for the project. Once the bond indebtedness has been met, the bill would require the tolls to be eliminated.

SB 1562 and HB 1049 were recently filed. Among other things, these bills would require toll increases to be justified by a study conducted by an independent third party, limit increases to an adjustment for inflation, and require two-thirds vote of the expressway authority board.

The aforementioned bills are why our political giving is so vital to our industry. We have friends in our State and National Congress who answer our calls when the time comes to support or oppose legislation, which affects our business. These like-minded Legislators need our financial support to run campaigns and get elected. Our success rate in supporting Legislators from both sides of the isle is well above 90%. I urge you to continue your support of FEPAC to help protect our industry and profession.

As I was reading this month's issue of Engineering Inc., I was impressed by the power and voice ACEC has in Washington. ACEC-FL reached its state commitment in support of the ACEC/PAC surpassing its $1M goal. ACEC/PAC is the largest PAC in the design industry and in the top 3% of all federal PACs. ACEC/PAC helped us to achieve major legislative victories in 2016, including multi-billion dollar transportation and water programs, legislation to promote contracting out and expand energy markets, as well as key tax code changes. We will need to continue to support our PAC as we look forward to key tax, health care and infrastructure legislation. Read this month's issue and you will see how each of our firms benefits from the successes of our National PAC in many ways. For those of you who want to get involved today: tickets for the ACEC/PAC Spring Sweepstakes are now available and going fast! Enter now for your chance to win one of 15 cash prizes worth $35,000. ACEC/PAC is the engineering industry's primary tool for political engagement at the national level. Your support of ACEC/PAC is critical to our federal advocacy efforts. If you chose to support the ACEC/PAC as a result of this message, please share that with Samantha Hobbs I want to personally extend my appreciation for your contribution.

This past Thursday, March 9th, the FICE/ACEC-FL Energy Committee held its inaugural meeting. We had a great exchange of ideas pledging to expand the committee and set an agenda to be inclusive of all FICE firms who practice in the vast Energy markets in Florida. The purpose of the committee is to develop industry-wide consensus and leadership positions on issues important to engineering firms operating in energy; undertake a proactive legislative and regulatory advocacy program; and communicate with the ACEC-FL/FICE membership on energy issues that affect their businesses. This committee is backed by the National ACEC Environment & Energy Committee, which will support our Great State of Florida in local and statewide energy initiatives and legislation. Please contact Samantha Hobbs with your firm's candidate to be part of this new committee. Our next meeting, via phone conference, will be held in early May. Transportation News! Registration has opened and hotel accommodations are going fast for the 2017 FICE Transportation Conference held at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport on May 10 th -11 th . With 450 attendees last year, and over 500 expected this year, you do not want to miss your chance to Sponsor and Exhibit!
