FLORIDA ENGINEERING SOCIETY
PROFESSIONAL POLICY (PP No.
27B)
ENCOURAGEMENT OF GRADUATING SENIORS TO TAKE AND PASS THE
FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING EXAM
A purpose of the Florida Engineering Society, as stated in Article II, Section I, of the Society Charter, is to "stimulate and develop professional concepts among all engineers; and to strive throughout the profession to make registration more meaningful in terms of individual achievement in engineering as reflected by education and practice."
FES and NSPE view registration as a professional engineer as the fundamental means of recognizing an engineering professional. The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination is the first step toward such professional registration. In an effort to encourage students to move into the professional world, the Society supports students taking the Fundamentals of Engineering exam prior to graduation. The young engineer nearing the completion of an undergraduate degree has recently acquired knowledge of subjects covered by the FE and is in the best position to pass the exam.
It is recognized that the universities may be placed at a disadvantage if the results of the FE tests are used as an assessment tool for evaluating the engineering education program. Such use of the test results is inappropriate where all universities do not require their engineering students to take the exam. Until such time that the state is prepared to require all graduating seniors to take an exit exam, the state should develop other means to assess the quality of the engineering programs.
Accordingly, it is the policy of the Florida Engineering Society that the engineering deans should strongly support students taking the Fundamentals of Engineering examination prior to graduation as it is in the best interest of the student.
