Course Name: GMEC Webinar 1: Dam Engineering, Two Case Histories: Construction Stages & Ensuring Dynamic Stability Lets

Speaker: Jose Gomez, PE, D.GE, F.ASCE

PDH Credit: 1 PDH

Course Description: Two dams, case histories-design & construction, related to construction stages and ensuring dynamic stability during earthquake occurrence. (1) 100-foot earth dam with dirty gravel shells and central silty sand core; diversion conduit capacity wasn't enough to handle creek torrential flow during rainy season and construction plan was changed on the go. (2) 135-foot earth dam with weathered rock shells and inclined clay core supported on a 30-foot thick, loose sandy hydraulic fill (HF). Due to the loose condition of the HF during an earthquake, liquefaction potential was possible causing dam failure. Stabilizing berms together with densification of a portion of the HF foundation was required.
